Campus Facilities The existing Waterloo Road campus is situated on a site of 2,200 square metres which includes the Wai Hang Sports Centre located 200 metres east of the campus. The site contains 48,000 square metres of usable space and accommodates 11 major structures. Oen Hall, the original site facility was opened in 1966 and houses general-use and specialist teaching accommodations and offices for teaching staff. The Sing Tao Communication Centre houses the School of Communication. A 1,400-seat Academic Community Hall was completed in 1978. The Christian Education Centre includes a 400- seat chapel and was opened in 1977; and the eight-storey Fong Shu Chuen Library, built in 1983. A major Redevelopment Project on the Waterloo Road Campus was completed in 1990 adding the Science Tower which houses the specialist facilities and staff accommodation of the Science Faculty; the Sir Run Run Shaw Building currently housing the School of Business and central administrative and academic support services; the Yeung Shui Sang Building housing the Student Affairs Office and various student facilities; the Au Shue Hung Centre for Film and Television, an integral part of the School of Communication; and the Wai Hang Sports Centre. The Shaw Campus, a new extension located on two sites, is only a five-minute walk from the existing campus. The site is 8,800 square metres and provides 32,000 square metres of usable space. The buildings will be occupied within the 1994-95 academic year. Site A building complex comprises an Administrative Tower, a 600,000-volume library, the Centre for Educational Development and a unit of the Computing and Telecommunications Services Centre. Site B complex houses the School of Business, the School of Continuing Education, lecture theatres, an international conference centre and various research centres of international standard, integrated with amenities for students and staff, and a sports hall. Adjacent to the new campus extension is a sports stadium that is shared with two polytechnic universities and provides a football pitch, a running tract, tennis courts and 1,000 spectator seats. Baptist University manages the facility. A second phase of construction will see the construction of an 11- storey hostel for the purpose of housing visiting scholars, postgraduate students and some senior undergraduates. It will accommodate about 400 persons with appropriate accompanying facilities. Occupied in October 1994 are 113 new flats for eligible senior staff. These are located in Fo Tan, Shatin. Library Resources As of November 30, 1994 our library statistics are as follows: Chinese Books 160,247 English Books 212,551 Bound Chinese periodicals 22,748 Bound English periodicals 35,239 Chinese music scores 470 English music scores 9,092 Total volumes 440,347 Periodical titles 5,419 Other items such as cassettes, CDs, computer files, maps, microcards, microfiches, CD-ROMs, transparencies, etc., total over 28,700. The Library has a Contemporary China Research Collection. The Collection has recently undergone revisions, reclassifications and compilation of indexes to facilitate its use and management. In this rare material collection there are over 4,000 rolls of microfilms and over 8,000 files of newspaper clippings containing information about China since 1950. The Library maintains close connections with other major libraries in Hong Kong and overseas through computer networks. An effective interlibrary loan system has also been established with these libraries. Through its online searching services, including the DIALOG and Profile Information, library users can access databases in the US and the UK. The Library in 1985 became Hong Kong's first fully automated library and will soon use INNOPAC, a sophisticated automated system, to provide up-dated library services to users. The Library will move to new facilities of about 6,500 sq. m. usable floor area on Shaw Campus in 1995. There users will enjoy the effective services of the Library in a comfortable and spacious environment. .
