The Centre for Educational Development (CED) is an agency designated by the Academic Board (now the Senate) in September 1984 in response to special consultant's report. The model of CED is considered appropriate to facilitate the development of teaching and learning within an institution espousing the whole-man education ideal. The CED's role extends into two main areas: a) services in the provision of teaching and learning resources - equipment, software, and assistance with their use; b)development programmes particularly in respect of teaching and learning. Closely linked with these is curriculum development. The operations include administrative tasks (e.g. service booking, materials and equipment acquisition , cataloguing and inventory); University-wide services (e.g. video, slide and audio tape programmes); learning laboratory (e.g. language and other media booths); development programmes (e.g. seminars and workshops for faculty and staff, students development programmes, research on teaching and learning.) Audio and visual equipment available University-wide include cassette recorders, photographics equipment, amplifier system, tape duplication and editing facilities, overhead projectors, slide projectors, filmstrip projectors, 8mm and 16mm film projectors, and closed-circuit television systems. The CED also holds an information resources collection. There are a teaching aids production station, project room, software library and hardware store as well as special AV classrooms. The Learning Laboratory is equipped with language booths and other media facilities. The Television Studio and Audio Recording Studio are available for special productions, and a Maintenance Workshop supports CED technical services. In addition to educational software available at CED, there is also and inter-library loan service established between the Centre and some 68 local institutions, companies and services centres. At present, CED maintains several student development programmes including "Reading Skills", "Thinking Skills", "Teaching and Learning at Tertiary Level", "Handling Basic AV Equipment", "Reading Programme", and a Learners' Club facility with multimedia learning room, quiet study room, and group study/project room. The Learners' Club incorporates the University's language enhancement initiative through club activities. Staff development programmes include induction meeting for new academic staff, the in-service program on the Practice of Higher Education (PHE), orientations for support staff, workshops on specific topics on faculty/departmental basis, a continuing series of seminars each academic year. In the new Shaw campus, the CED will be provided with greatly enhanced facilities. There will be a full size television recording studio, a multimedia development laboratory, new audiovisual special rooms, a teaching practice room, and substantial additions in equipment. The academic support functions of CED will be further elaborated in the context of operating in a twin-campus (Ho Sin Hang campus and Shaw campus) setting. .
