        National Environmental Data Referral Service (NEDRES)

The National Environmental Data Referral Service, NEDRES, is a National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) program.  Users may access a
broad range of environmental information through the NEDRES on-line computer
directory.  NEDRES is a network of federal, state, academic and private
organizations cooperating to improve access to environmental data.  The NEDRES
data base is a computer catalog of environmental data that identifies the
existence, location, characteristics, and availability of environmental data.

The data base documents environmental data from the sun through the atmosphere
to the earth and the oceans.  Solar and upper atmosphere physics, satellite
remote sensing, oceanography, climatology, meteorology, pollution, toxic
substances, geophysics and geology, geochemistry, and freshwater and marine
fisheries are some of the disciplines included.  It contains only
descriptions, not the actual data, and refers the user to the holder of the
data.

The data base documents several types of environmental information
descriptions.  It includes:
        1. data centers, programs and organizations
        2. data files not in published form
        3. serial publications of data
        4. published data sets
        5. atlases or published data in graphic or analog form
        6. publications containing extensive compilations, analyses
             or applications of data
        7. manuals, user guides, or documentation of data sets
        8. data catalogs, inventories, or bibliographies

A search of the NEDRES data base provides a complete description of available
data sources that satisfy the search specifications.  The resulting
information describes the data in sufficient detail allowing the user to
decide whether to contact the data holder for specific details or to arrange
to acquire the data.  Field definitions are:

Researchers and scientists who use the NEDRES data base are from all
disciplines including users from academic, private, corporate, and government
organizations.  Examples of user groups are environmental organization
libraries and the medical research community.
