But they reached that conclusion *not* from studying Pike's behavior, but from reading the information stored on the computers of the Enterprise about Earth history. Thus, their conclusions were in relation to the *community* of humans they were hoping to construct on the planet, in order to carry out the tasks they no longer had the energy to carry out themselves. Yes, they could have enslaved a _few_ humans successfully, but they couldn't have kept an entire race of slaves going as effectively as they needed for their project of rebuilding the planet.
