Because after Pike was kidnapped by the Talosians, Number One, Spock and Jose had a debriefing in the Briefing Room. And presumably as part of that debriefing, Spock and Jose told Number One about everything that had taken place on the planet's surface, including the existence of Vina and what she looked like. BTW, they had also put a drawing of a Talosian head on the briefing room's viewscreen, so Number One knew what to expect even though she hadn't seen a Talosian yet herself. > Kind of odd too that at the end the Talosians should be convinced that > humans can't survive in captivity, after they've been holding Vina that > way for 18 years. Vina changed her mind at that point and decided to accept death too, rather than continue to act as a lure for more Earthmen to be kidnapped. She had apparently fallen in love with Pike, since the Talosians had selected him for her based on things in her own mind. But then she realized that if you love someone you don't act as an accomplice to turn him into a slave. -- Steven D.
