I just heard that story no more than an two hours ago, and only five minutes after watching LAYER CAKE. Because of such a recent familiarity with him, I was able to form an immediate opinion. He's an excellent choice. With darker hair and a tuxedo, he'll definitely fit the mold. The show I saw the report on is MSNBC, the one where the newscaster does that countdown. He claimed that sources say that Craig is more like the Bond in the novels. As a teenager I read all almost all of those Bond novels, and so far, the closest to the character in the novel -- and the closest adaptation in FEEL -- was the man in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, George Lazenby, and Brosnan came in a very, very close second (the commitment by producers of the films to the silly gadgetry detracted from the potential he brought to it). Roger Moore was the worst. I loved James Bond movies as a kid, but I've hated them since my early twenties. Yet, I still hope with each new film that they'll stop making them silly action flicks. Here comes another one, and they're going to use as source material the only novel that hasn't been seriously adapted, CASINO ROYALE (there was a ridiculous David Niven thing, with Woody Allen as a villain), and they're promising to make it like the novel. From what I understand, the gadgetry will be added to the plot, but it won't dominate. Or perhaps I heard what I wanted to hear. Anyway, with Craig as Bond and a more serious approach by producers, maybe they'll make a Bond film to rival the Jack Ryan films. Audiences are clearly sophisticated enough to appreciate espionage presented without villains living in stainless steel caverns and hatching almost campy plots to rule the world. -- Alric Knebel .
