That's "classic" trek-think. Basically two dimensional thinking in a three dimensional universe. How many times have we seen a situation where "the ship" could have gone OVER or AROUND something and instead 'the captain' insists that the only option is to go THROUGH it. Only when Kirk was fighting Khan do we see any acknowledgment that there are three dimensions. So the idea that one could explore in a circular pattern is easily lost in Trek-think.
