This whole discussion is quite interesting but I suppose a more 
practical and believable explanation would be that when the separatist 
Vulcans arrived on Romulus, there was another species there and they 
bred with them.  Over time, the other species was fully absorbed and the 
result is neither Vulcan nor the other, but Romulan.
