Judah was neither Jacob's firstborn son nor the son who would produce the priestly tribe, he was the son thru whom God would fullfill His promise to Israel and the world. The leadership according to Jacob, was to go to Judah, but this did not happen for over 600 years. Moses came from Levi, Joshua from Ephraim, Gideon from Manasseh, Samson from Dan, Samuel from Ephraim, Gideon from Manasseh, Samson from Dan, Samuel from Ephraim, and Saul from Benjamin. But when David finally became King, JUDAH held the Sceptre and did not relinquish it until Shiloh (the Messiah (Jesus) came). Shiloh is a name for the Messiah related to the Hebrew word for 'peace' (shalom) and means in effect "the one who brings peace". It could ONLY apply to Jesus because as Daniel 9:26 predicted "After thressscore and two weeks (32 years) shall Messiah (Jesus) be cut off (die), but not for himself (the Son); and the people of the prince (the Roman Titus) shall destroy the city (Jerusalam) and the sanctuary (the 2nd Temple)." The Temple was destroyed in 70 AD and Jesus was the only would that could possibly be the Messiah.
