My comments are more directed at audiences in general, not just sci-fi fans, but I can see your point. Films that get great word-of-mouth tend to bring in more "casual" fans, even if it's not their favorite genre. So far, "Serenity" has gotten generally good reviews, so I'm kinda surprised that it isn't doing better. The timing of it's release combined with a lack of direct competition has served the film well, so there are no excuses there. Ken - who'll probably go see "Wallace 'n Gromit" again...with a group of people this time. .
