It is just silly > to think that a planet would have only one environment. You don't like the George Lucas mono-environments Hoth, Tatooine, Endor... Every planet should have different terrain types, a world may be more temperate than others, but each will have swamp, forest, plain, and the like. A lot of this depends on how much water they could get to each one versus how much water was there when they landed. Temperature differences could be accounted for with shades, mirrors, and greenhouse gasses.
