I think I prefer the way they handled the battle.  The "in the trenches"
view would have looked much like what we saw in the first episode
(probably less interesting, since both sides would be doing that
line-advance line-retreat rotating thing), and the strategy &
troop-movement view would have been nothing more than what Pompey was
able to sum up by drawing in the sand.

Washing up on Pompey's beach: probably just filler + Vorenus character
moment.
