I think it's worse, which is odd, because it involves theologies to which I don't subscribe. Nevertheless, there's something about the way Polanski shot it, the conviction of the actors and the script, and to an external degree, the fact that it was the film Polanski made shortly before the Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson family.
