I don't fault them for that, the "line" is not the Maginot line, which was circumvented just as you say. The "line" was a group of ships loosely parked in the same area, probably a Lagrange point which makes it easy to maintain that orbit, but if they saw you going up, the "line" would move. IF you are defending a gravity well you have to slow down to approach and to re-enter the atmo... unless you go around the opposite side of the planet from them and never stray, they'll spot you, since you are on approach, there is no way to put the planet between you and them, therefore a belt of ships is a perfect beachhead, in our solar system the best lines of defense would be the asteroid belt, kupier belt, and Oort Cloud...
