Especially with the "creative" redistribution of electoral > areas. > Ted > Right now, there is no such thing as a moderate Republican. party discipline is such that they never break ranks, despite their public pronouncements. In previous Congresses, the emphasis was on passing bills with bi-partisan support, but ever since the gingrich days there has been a strong emphasis on refusing to compromise. The result is that bills that might get passed only with the help of some Democrats have been blocked by majority party leadership. Also there is a trend to keep the text of bills secret until literally minutes before votes are cast. With the current Republican majorities in the executive, legislative(, and soonthe judicial branches,) and the fundamemtal dishonesty of the actors, the whole system has become perverted. I think the only hope is a combination of a Democratic majority in the Senate (Congress is lost due to Delay's efforts at gerrymandering) and Rhenquist retiring and the Supreme Court reverting to its post-Roberts dynamic. Maybe people will regain their senses and the whacko-right will crawl back under its rock for a few more decades. .
