Maybe it is different where you are but here they have an Athlon 2800 with 
DVD rom, 40gb hd and 256mb ram for $399 after rebate.
They want $50 bucks for another 256MB of ram so I figure I can buy a 512 
stick for that much.

I have seen heard good things about people with Toshibas.
I just don't get the Thinkpad thing.  I see refurb P3 900mhz thinkpads for 
$400.  That seems really high to me for what you are getting.

Not sure what the noises come from, it doesn't happen all the time.
Yes, that is the part of her laptop that broke but neither battery will 
hold a charge any longer either and the comp itself is only a pentium 233 
so I don't really want to spend money on it.
