The HP Compaq V2000 right off their website is cheaper... add the wireless,
bump the CPU up to the 1.4 if you want to, wife won't probably notice the
difference between 1.3 and 1.4, take the free screen upgrade, take the CD
burner if you want it, I'd probably keep the standard system and get the RAM
upgrade, nobody I know likes Windows XP and any apps with just 256 MB.

I always bought Dell Toshiba or IBM when I could, but of those three Dell is
the only one that doesn't charge a premium for their gear.

HP is either an HP, or a Compaq the lines are still pretty separated, which
means the features and whatnot differ from their home user and business
aimed notebooks.

Dell's Inspiron 6000 is almost exactly the same machine for $628 after
rebate + $15 for wireless, price at the Home and Office store, price is
higher for the Small and Large business stores.

Drive noises? or Fan noises? both can be replaced, and if the battery thingy
is the button latch that keeps it in, I replaced 3 of those ($5) on my old
Lattitude. If its a piece of the outer shell those are more expensive to
replace ($25+).
