To blame a natural disaster like a hurricane on global > warming caused by Americans is just dumb. I can't speak for Ted - but to me the reason Americans are open to criticism on this issue is the stubborn refusal of the administration to take it seriously. Now, we all know that the situation is actually more complicated. And I salute those states and cities who have ignored the scepticism in Washington and instituted their own measures. That's a sign of the innate strength of your system and it gives me hope. But the global, public face of America is GWB. And he and his crew are in serious denial. > Is there a global warming problem? Sure. But it's 'global'. Everyone > one contributes. Yes - but Westerners in general and Americans in particular contribute out of proportion to the rest. One way or another that has to change. It would be better for everyone if the change wasn't everybody everywhere producing as much CO2 as the average American does now. > The implication that if we had adopted the Kyoto protocols that this > would have been prevented is got to be the stupidest thing I've heard > lately. That's quite a leap from what was actually said. And you're quite right in that no one could ever say there was a definite link between global warming and any particular event. But it seems reasonable to me that if the atmosphere is asked to store more energy it will be more prone to what we currently regard as extreme weather. Let's all hope that Katrina level hurricanes doen't become typical summer storms. -- SB .
