Most of the time a blow would come in from the left, which is one of the reasons the prime parry is the way it is you can draw your sword and block in the same motion, seconde is the same but on the other side. Basically you have covered the main areas of attack with a large blocking area quickly. With a short sword like you suggested the best way to wear it would be handle first drawing it straight out with the blade tucked along your forearm giving support for the close in work that a shorter sword requires and to control the blade, you'ld also have to be nifty enough on your feet so you could close the distance.
