Remember too, that many of the roads and stairs at the ruins are more than 2000 years old and slippery because they are marble. No hand railings or even guardrails along the mountains either. Here's a sample of what Meteora is like, but the photos don't do it justice. Many of these monasteries were only accessible by being hauled up the sides of the cliff in a net until small roads and steps were cut in them about 30 years ago.
