Now that you ask, yes.  TPTB should have instead:

1.  Built a time machine.
2.  Went back in time.
3.  Murdered their grandfathers.
4.  Thus preventing their own birth.
5.  Thus preventing them from ruining ER.

Frankly I can see no flaws in this plan.
