It's a specialty. Doctors choose to work in the ER because that's the field of medicine that appeals to them, for any of a number of reasons. > > Can you be a doctor in a hospital if you're not fast on your feet but > you're booksmart? Certainly not the ER. Right. ER medicine requires certain atributes, just as other specialties do. > > What does it take to be a General Doctor with an office in the suburbs? > I bet it's expensive to rent the office but is it hard to start a > practice? > General practice/family practice is yet another specialty that some doctors opt for. Doc Sharon would probably know more about it than I do, but I don't think it's that common for a freshly minted doctor to just go open his own practice. Usually he'll join with an established group practice. (Not only is the necessary infrastructure already in place, but the hours are usually more managable, since the doctors in the office will share/split on-call and evening/weekend hours. > Shouldn't an intern work in a non-ER part of the hospital and then move > to the ER? Emergency Medicine is a speciality. Medical students who have made to the choice to specialize in Emergency Medicine obviously have to work in ERs. Naomi .
