OK, but that still doesn't explain why they would have been doing
that.  If they wanted to get from Chicago to Colorado in the shortest
amount of time, they should have been on an interstate.  And I-80,
which goes from Chicago to at least Reno, IS a 4-lane interstate (two
lanes each way), and looked nothing like that.
