Subj : win98 sound issues

Greetings
I installed win98 on my pc. Installed all the drivers from manufaturers disks.
for the sound card, and voice modem. The only sound I get is from music cd's
that are in the cdrom drive connected to the sound card. I have no speaker icon
next to the clock? Device manager reports all the devices are working
correctly.
I'm stumped. Is there anything I can do to "associate" sounds with the devices?
I think once I get the speaker icon in the tray I'll be all set? Any
suggestions?
