Quite so.  But we 'crack' large molecules into lighter fractions in order 
to increase the yield of fuels.  We could similarly polymerize lighter 
fractions into heavier ones in order to produce more plastics, if the 
lighter ones were not in such high demand for the manufacture of smog...
