I see your point. The EC has draw backs too. Whichever party carries a state immediatly invalidates the other parties votes. If your party didn't win the state, you wasted your time voting. It also discourages the politicians from campaigning well enough for the electorate to get a good grasp of what their about unless your in California,Florida,Ohio or New York. If you live in one of those states you probably get sick of hearing them. It just seems that a popular vote might be a tool to encourage people to get out and vote. Maybe not.
