Because all the formations arn't SOLID rock, some are soft and will cave the hole without a liner to prevent it. > of underground lake of oil, why would drilling deeper help anything? Because there are more than one gas bearing formation at different depths. On older wells it took so long to drill with a *spudder* that they would just stop at the first good pay they hit. When that played out they would go back in and drill on down to a deeper gas pay in a different formation. Now they just drill down to where they want to go and produce it all if they can. The oil comes from solid rock here. Porous rock. The gas moving into the well bore here and the oil migrates there with it and is pumped to surface.
