I have owned 2 Alinco HT's and they both stopped transmitting within the first year, after very light use. #2 - you can get a 5 watt HT for about 50 dollars more, brand new. 300mw is not going to do anything for you unless you live like 10 feet from the repeater you want to use. 300mw is going to get you a usable range in an open field of about 1/4 of a mile, about 1/16 of a mile with trees and buildings. To put it into prespective for you, a FRS (Family Radio Service) Radio is more powerful at 500mw and I am sure you are familiar with the range on those, about 1/2 a mile if your lucky.
