is not what i said i've seen on my system(s)... in my case, its always been a 
combination of factors that lead to really wierd things happening...

one specific case was that cron fired up multiple copies of the same program... 
i don't know if they fired up over time or all at once as that info is simply 
not available... yes, i know that i could serialize access via semaphores but 
they, too, can be troublesome... especially diskbased ones what can happen when 
the system experiances high disk loads and cpu utilization that are already 
causing things to go wierd...
