The filebone has been dead for at least the last 4 years.  Most all of the file 
echos that were on the filebone were really FileGate file echos that we 
(filegate Coordinators) sent to the filebone through my system's connection to 
George, and then John.  When Larry left with no warning I was asked by some of 
the FileGate FDN coordinators to "give up this pretense" of there still being a 
filebone and just call the distribution what it really is.. the FileGate.  
These coordinators didn't appreciate the fact that the filebone barely gave the 
filegate credit for their work.

Now we use backchannel areas for this purpose.  Only the Coordinator gets the 
file and after testing, etc., the coordinator sends out the file.  If your tick 
manager is set up correctly, you can make use of these areas.

The FileGate has always done things this way for security reasons.  Even the 
Filebone eventually gave up what's called "open hatching" where any sysop could 
upload a file into the distribution stream. Whether intentional or not, the 
chance of passing virus infected progams is and was then, just to great. 
Responsible file distribution means someone takes responsibility for the files 
he or she is sending to your system.

Umm.. John did the same thing Todd..   He had some exceptions and so does the
FileGate.
