Subj : Tiers To : Ross Cassell From : Andrea Santos Date : Tue Jul 31 2001 11:54 am -> SH> Then they shouldn't be running systems on which so many people -> rely. -> While you are a sysadmin for a network of computers for a school, you -> have the tools and _resources_ to achieve this perfection you speak -> of, many of us here in Fidonet, are low life scumbag hobbyists whom -> dont have pictures of our T1 lines hanging on the wall, Pictures of T1 lines? Actually there is a network drawing for the office, but it's completely lost on me. fortunately, hubby reads greek because I'm not taking it up. ;-) -> server farms -> and diesel operated generators Wait, doesn't Jack have one of these? There is a backup generator at our location and it's been a rather interesting setup. It's worked occasionally but also crapped out twice last summer. ;-) -> to kick in at a moments notice -> whenever a cloud floats by overhead the least little bit "gray". Get a big enough cloud here and the systems are going down regardless. -> We dont do what we do, like you do, to make a living to pay the bills -> and have the frills, many of us have to drive ourselves to work at -> our real jobs for 8 to 10 hours a day and try to get 4 to 8 hours of -> sleep and balance this _HOBBY_ among the other things in our lives -> such as family and other commitments including _life_ with the time -> that is remaining each day. Yeah we squeeze this in between work, appointments, school shows, extra-curriculars, cooking, cleaning, etc. I can add a HS Senior into the equation and you don't want to hear the accompanying list. ;-) -> Methinks that your experience as a network guru for your employer is -> clouding your judgement, here in Fidonet we are hobbyists all of us -> and _including_ you. Those of us whom have volunteered to do things, -> be that serve as a mail mover, or a coordinator or whatever, are -> doing it because we want to, not because we are being _PAID_ to, I -> assure you, none of us are getting paid one red cent. You're expected to babysit your computer 24/7 anyway. ;-) -> So Stewart since maintaining computer systems and having them -> networked and all that is part of _your_ job description at your -> employer whom which _PAYS_ you to do such, you better be striving for -> and achieving the perfection that you be preaching here. Otherwise, there's a line a folks ready and willing to replace you.
