Now tell the people the JY>*rest* of the story; you are in contact with your system daily, via laptop, JY>making additions, corrections, adjustments, whatever is necessary, which is a JY>good thing, of course. The longest the system has went without anyone touching it locally or remotely was 78 days.. I do login via pcanywhere most often or not to make sure things are squared away.. Example had a downlink as about a password issue. I didn't have my list with me so logged in via ftp and pulled it down.. Did not require a pcanywhere login but I do check the system nearly every day.. I add downlinks all the time.. JY>You didn't mention a crash or two that required intervention by someone onsite, JY>even if it was only to stick a CD in and reboot, did you? Sure that has happened but like I said if I did not have a wife or friends then there could arise a problem... Since I have been gone on this trip I have not had to re-boot but I did screw up a config a week or so ago that took me 3-4 hours to fix.. But I could have made that mistake sitting in front of the thing If i would have been there I could have stuck the cd in and been back up in 10 minutes.. The wife was on another island for the weekend so I had to re-build by hand. I could have called my bud and he could have come over and stuck the cd in the player but heck why bother him when I could correct my mistake. JY>Now, wanna know what happens when a system runs unattended for months at a JY>time? Ask Andrea about Jerry Gause and her netmail. BTW, where *is* Jerry? I JY>wonder if he knows that his system stopped transferring mail on June 4? D'ya JY>suppose it's still running, sans monitor or in a closet somewhere and he thinks JY>it's doing what his stable software intended it to do? That is why I have emergency e-mail address's along with a cell phone that people can call me when I am in the mainland. If the worst happens they can call luckily we have not had that problem yet... Murphies Law works against ya with time so I am sure the worst will happen someday the key is to minimize the number of possible failures.
