Subj : Mystic BBS To : Michael Grant From : Carl Austin Bennett Date : Tue May 15 2001 02:42 am CAB> I just downloaded the new version (1.07.3) and it seems to have the CAB> same problems with quoting. MG> Thanks for letting me know; I'll go and grab it. If you're running the sort of message bases that go Squish under your hooves, the upgrade is worthwhile. At least it has my Mystic penguin happily quacking away... quack quack QWK! MG> It's much ado about nothing; just as is Dale's obsession with every MG> message needing in his view to have 100% correct MSGIDs. The MSGIDs are 100% correct. James fixed that one, Michael. MG> Although written from scratch, Mystic was largely structured around MG> Renegade BBS. Renegade was originally a hack of Telegard; and all are MG> also similar structure to Remote Access. Never tried Renegade here; I'd always been a Maxim00se critter all the way back to the day I first put this BBS online in 1993. Unfortunately, the moose who created that one (a local lad who's long since migrated) has been too swamped with work to release source code so there's no penguin version. All that waiting with bated breath for a Maximoose/LNX gives a moose is a strong need for Listerm00se, the mouthwash for the modern moose. MG> I've tried all of the above and several other RA & Renegade compatible MG> packages, and I found Mystic to be the most flexible and easiest to custom MG> which was what I was mainly looking for in a BBS. I was looking mostly for a way to keep my existing Squish bases after moving to Linux; Husky makes a good tosser and a sysop message editor, but a Squish aware non-commercial BBS package under Linux is a very rare find indeed. MBSE is JAM only, Daydream and Sync proprietary, BBBS costs an arm and a leg. MG> I refuse to change my choice of software just because you don't like the MG> way it quotes; and it's none of your damn business what software I choose CAB> Pity James didn't change this when he made the other bug fixes. MG> James has been doing his best, but I understand real life has intruded upo MG> his progress in Mystic. I don't mind putting up with a few minor bugs; Too true, although we don't really know where this moose has migrated now. MG> None of the bugs cause any major problems for others in this network MG> so I see no reason for people to obsess over them and critisize someone Only major bug is a size limitation on Squish bases; if James is running using the Just Another Moose format, he doesn't get to see how his code can be swamped if someone were to throw a year's worth of FILK at it in Squish. MG> I have every confidance that James will eventually address these problems; MG> seems a very capable programmer. I think his only limitation is the time MG> he has to give to the program's development, which is understandable. Yup! CAB> I believe MOOSEID/REPLY were on the list of items that'd been addressed CAB> in 1.07.3, although I haven't set up any neat and stricter traps to CAB> test this. MG> Thank goodness for that! In any case, the MOOSEID is up there between the antlers of each moosage, but REPLY is still missing for SquishyBog critters. Still, it's always good to have MOOSEID to avoid being just another anonymoose swamp critter. I haven't checked Jim Howarth's swamp at telnet://clockworkorangebbs.org to see if he's tried the new version, but it should go well with toast and JAM. --- Mystic BBS v1.07.3 (Linux) * Origin: Pause-Caf‚ 1-613-549-5599 telnet://cafe.dyndns.org (1:249/116) .
