Subj : ERRORS in Route List! To : Andrea Santos From : Carl Austin Bennett Date : Wed May 09 2001 04:57 am AS> What's this have to do with a routelist? CAB> Foxy is listing all of these dead NC's as if they were regularly polling CAB> their RC for mail. AS> Thought she was listing what was provided to her from the individual AS> regions and whatever routing they had in place. If a Region doesn't AS> update their info, that's not her fault. The dead nets were listed as such until March 2001, when someone at the zone level asked for the default route for each region and inserted that in place of "no route found". The removal of the priority field (which could've been used to distiguish between a live working link and a dead net) is also recent. The nets that have been defaulted to 297/11, for instance, are: ; 1:1/117 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 ; 1:1/121 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 ; 1:1/148 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:14 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:100 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:280 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:284 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:285 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:289 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:293 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:297 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:297 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:298 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:299 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:2808 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 1:2809 1:297/11 1:140/1 14 20010316 RC14 even though 1:14 and 1:297 might be the only ones fed from Michael McCabe. The only nets listed as anything other than this default route are: 1:282 1:282/0 1:10/345 14 20001015 RC14 + 1:288 1:288/34 1:2604/104 1:140/1 14 19991222 1:140/1 1:290 1:290/111 1:10/345 14 20000214 NC290 + 1:2810 1:2810/13 1:106/1 14 20001112 1:18/500 Of these, 1:288 feeds from Canada, 1:290 is Gary Petersen (out of service, with one downlink still online and possibly orphan) and 1:2810 is a dead net in which the NC listing answers voice as a wrong number and nothing works. Out of this set, I'll accept 1:282 (Jeff Smith) and 1:297 (Michael McCabe). The rest of these routes are garbage and/or cut-and-pasted default routes. CAB> If these are just "no route found" that've been defaulted somewhere, say CAB> so! AS> If you're so concerned about Region 14, start calling all the nodes and AS> report the no answers to RC14. The no answers are already no secret. Just because Foxy or Janis think that a default route/no priority to a non-existent net looks better in the list than "no route" that doesn't mean that these aren't flagged in the ERNROUTE files: R 14 1:14/ALL 1:297/11 1:140/1 2001O315 1:140/1 ; ? 14 1:100/ALL No known route - 1:100/0 wrong number TOMBSTONE ; ? 14 1:280/ALL No known route - 280/1 does not answer TOMBSTONE N 14 1:282/ALL 1:282/0 1:10/345 2001O415 1:10/345 N 14 1:285/ALL 1:285/26 1:10/345 20010415 1:10/345 N 14 1:288/ALL 1:288/34 1:342/3 1:18/500 20010420 ; ? 14 1:289/ALL No known route - 289.0 does not answer TOMBSTONE N 14 1:290/ALL 1:290/111 1:10/345 2001O408 ; ? 14 1:293/ALL No known route - 293/0 not in service TOMBSTONE N 14 1:297/ALL 1:297/11 1:140/1 20010116 1:397/1 N 14 1:298/ALL 1:298/0 1:297/11 1:140/1 20010503 Alive ; ? 14 1:299/ALL No known route - 299/0 not in service TOMBSTONE ; ? 14 1:2808/ALL No known route - 2808/0 gives fast busy TOMBSTONE N 14 1:2809/ALL 1:2809/0 1:297/11 1:140/1 20010501 Alive ; ? 14 1:2810/ALL No known route - 2810 does not answer TOMBSTONE P 14 1:284/47 1:10/345 20010415 1:10/345 This is ridiculous; nearly half of the default routes in one list are revealed as corresponding to dead NC systems or even entire dead nets. Some of these NC's have the "Down" flag on their own local nodes in the nodelist. Toast! AS> If that gets you nowhere, send the info to the Z1C. CAB> What good would that do? She's still listing Ray Brown as a live node! AS> Has anyone in Region 14 updated their route list? How would that fix the ZIN listings? They come from the ZC not Michael McCabe. AS> RC14 should have notified the Z1C at the time he removed Ray that the AS> help node needed to come out of the nodelist. Ray was the RC14. Z1C removed him from that as his system was down for good. There's no way that any Z1C now could not have known that Ray is history. AS> If RC14 is not updating the segment, and this has been going on for a AS> good year, there are two solutions; replace RC14 or the Z1C should receive AS> the information as provided and manually edit that segment. Lost cause, I'm afraid. They're running out of people to handle this mess. If Michael does pop his antlers up long enough for me to raise this issue, I will certainly ask that he demand Foxy remove these "default routes" to nets which no longer exist and replace 1999-era routing data with something newer. Of all the region fourteen nodes still online, I strongly doubt that more than 20% are reachable by using the routing information provided by Foxy's list. --- Msged/LNX TE 06 * Origin: Pause-Caf‚ Kingston 613-549-5599 telnet:cafe.dyndns.org (1:249/116) .
