I remember, before switching feed to JohnS at the end of 1999, the costs to 
feed one local net were $US24/month payable to 1:12/12, with the restriction 
that the feed could not be passed on to out-of-net nodes without paying more.

When there were dozens of local nodes, the cost could be split down to 
something almost tolerable per node, but once sysops started leaving it became 
awkward for those of us left behind to pay the big bucks for an echo feed.

It could happen if there were several thousand nodes and one small group still 
had a monopoly on echomail distribution at the zone level.

Hopefully sysops know better now than to give anyone such a monopoly.
