In the better newsgroups that I've seen, usually the poster states in his or 
her opening line who they are responding to, and quotes back the original 
message below. That way, it can be a bit easier to follow replies. (I still 
don't like the top-posting habit, though; some don't do that in the newsgroups, 
but a lot of posters do.)

If you gate to a Newsgroup from an FTN, you can add this automatically with 
your editor and in some cases, by the gating software itself, so that all 
messages posted from the gate will have some sort of thread identification in 
the message body.
