Subj : Newsgroups? To : Gary Gilmore From : Al Robres Date : Sun Jul 22 2001 10:47 pm -=> Quoting Gary Gilmore to All <=- GG> Do we -really- need to keep importing newsgroups as echoes? GG> Useless... if someone wants to read a newsgroup, I think they'll be GG> more likely to read it via the net, not after it's been through the GG> wringer to FTN format. ('Course, this is just my opinion, and tough if GG> it gets your knickers in a twist.) Not my knickers, but there again I can see a can of worms opening up here as some just love to debate and fight about just about anything. Is the glass half full or empty.... Personally, I like to have as many options as possible. Much like carrying other networks, some newsgroups do full in the gaps. A good example is my interest in DVDs alt.video.dvd rec.video.dvd.titles Currently there isn't an echo that provides the rich favor I enjoy now on that topic. I gate these newsgroups via newsgate to a few BBS systems now with no effort on my part. I see your point and a few of the others that we want to be a cut above the rest. But in a shrinking world of sysops and users. It's also nice to keep the best of both worlds. Telnet servers software like netmodem have sparked new interest in the BBS world. Some new users have never heard of a BBS before. "A search engine pointed me toward your BBS" via a web site or your telnet address. The beauty for me is I don't need anyone's OK to do it or need to count on others to provide my options ;=) So it's still a "Win-Win" situation Al ~~~ ReneWave v2.00+ --- Renegade v05-11 Exp * Origin: Bad Dog BBS (1:218/903) .
