Subj : DOS BBS in Win2000 To : All From : Doug Gleason Date : Sun Jul 09 2000 07:23 am I'm trying to run a DOS BBS under Win2000. FrontDoor will run fine but as soon as it tries to pass to the BBS or Bgfax it will drop carrier, that's using X00, BNU, or ADF for a fossil. If I use WinfossilNT, or Netfossil I will get this error message: 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem: The system cannot open com1 port requested by the application. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. When I first set up win95 a few years back I ran into the same sort of problem and was able to fix it by adding this line to the SYSTEM.INI "com1autoassign=1" This also worked with Win98. More details on this command can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q138/1/59.asp When I upgraded to Win2000 it kept the command line in the SYSTEM.INI but I guess Win2000 does'nt use the SYSTEM.INI or this command doesn't work for it. Has anyone found a way around this to get Win2000 or NT to release the serial port? Maybe add this command into the registry? The web page above also describes another way around this by disabling the caller access to Dial-Up Networking but the instructions are for Win95 and I can't figure out how to do it in Win2000.
