Subj : W98 stabilty? To : All.. From : Hans Andersson Date : Sun Jul 10 2005 12:58 pm The impression is that instability in Windows 98 seems related to the number of installed add on cards and other (in memory) programs. Have a sound card, USB card, scanner, CD writer with in memory UDF program and a firewall. When all is installed, then after some time, instability and hangs up occurs. Typical, - W98 does not boot up next time, the harddisk gets very buisy and thrashes and the system locks up after a while. But after booting up in safe mode, - then W98 boots up in "normal" mode next try. Are the any free programs for testing the longtime PC hardware stability? Sometimes a thorough PC vaccum-clean up helps if there are much dust and grit inside. In another PC that was instable, - the CPU had a fat thick slab of cooling grease, the cause of overheating instability. The same PC failed also in a memory test with only a special pattern. After cleaning the memory chips the memory worked ok. (A small speck of tin seemed to cause a short circuit over the printed circuit pattern at the connecting edges, much to little room in between, - seems to be a fabrication fault) Though all problems is perhaps not always caused by Bill Gates products? But a "clean" W98 without any "add ons" seems to be stable. But used W95 on the same PC before without any problems. Perhaps internet connections have something to do with the lockups? The PC speed goes in snail pace mode after a while out in the world on the wide internet web. Only remedy is to disconnect and reboot to get the speed back. Somtimes the firewall is not active after boot upp, something must disable the firewall. But after a restore of a W98 backup, - the internet is speedy again but with time the speed decreases again. But it is it not a serious design flaw in W98 to allow adds on to the OS kernel on the fly trough internet? Is seems to that one must have in depth book about the W98 OS to get it to work ok? With all problems it seems to be a high risk project to use internet for finacial transactions? It feels very unsure and with an expensive never ending need to new updated firewalls, antispy and virus programs etc... - without any absolut security. Linux OS appears to be a safer alternative than Windows on the internet? Read somewhere on the internet that many uses the old single user non multitasking DOS for greater stability.
