 That is the only way to Archive nowdays. 
And if one uses a "Virtual Drive" program you can have the contents of
many CD's on the Hard drive for Instant access.
For the Win XP folks Microsoft has a FREE download of one that works.
The only glitch is that you need to store the CD contents on the Hard
Drive as an ISO file. But most buring programs will convert the CD
contents to an ISO file. I set up one Win XP machine so they could run
the "Thomas Map" program without putting the CD in the Drive.
