"many computers"?   Just how many is many?  I have never found a USB connection 
loose.   You could try to squeeze the outer shield a millimeter along the broad 
side so that there is a better friction-fit.

"glorified telephone RJ-11"?   IMHO, USB connectors seem to be designed well 
for frequent use.
