This I know as I've a 56k internal here I've never been able to get to
work on either of two machines.
It's a PnP AND operate as a hardware modem.

I don't trust the dealers either and I was going to have a sales person
explicitly write on the receipt that it was a hardware modem to be
returned if misrepresented.
