Why didn't I come to think about this earlier.
I have a USB 1.0 modem and it works just fine here.

If you are having a USB 2.0 thingie, of course you will need a USB 2.0 port
in order to benifit from the higher speed, but a modem doesn't need that speed.
If it works fine on a slow serial port it would work just fine (like mine) on a 
faster
USB 1.0 port.
