I want something compatible with Linux and almost don't care
what that something is as long as it's 56K etc. 

After using cable access for over six months I am not highly
motivated to spend money on a modem (can you tell?). In the
very near future not having cable access will be comparable to
browsing in text-only mode is right now. :-\
