Hard drive as seen booted to Knoppix command line is /dev/hde 
so it's seeing the drive as third primary IDE. 
I was able to fdisk type c, 82, 83, 83 from command line.

Yup.
I could run the installation script after booting command line Knoppix
but I think I still want to retain 98 too for some reason, can always
toggle it type 83 later if I change my mind, what's left of it
that is ;-)

I'd need to to edit a configuration file as Knoppix's KDE desktop locks
up the mouse on PSAUX when loaded from the Promise card

Must be, you know I've met more generous individuals in fidonet
than I ever met in person, you included.
Without that CD burned for me and sent along  I'd be offline except for
the rather limited 485 box.
