Or, look into one of those new voice over the internet protocol phone 
services.  My son (in Atlanta, GA) just contracted with Vonage to switch 
his phone services over using the new protocol.

I see some advantages to it and some disadvantages.  I'd like to save 
money on my local phone service if I could but for now it's not possible 
with Verizon.  Only AT&T (around here anyway) provides that service.  
Cost is reasonable - $29.95 per month for unlimited local and long 
distance service.  Of course you must have either cable or telephone DSL 
already installed in order for it to work.  Neither SBC nor Verizon 
offers that service "yet".
