(only joking of course) I would totally agree that for 'normal' home Internet connection sharing and modest file and printer sharing, even 802.11b is enough bandwidth. The people who like to sell stuff however are envisioning a future where home media sharing becomes widely available-- sending video from your computer to TVs throughout the house, for example. If that becomes common, it would require a lot of bandwidth! (By the way, expect a faster, standardized replacement for 802.11g to be coming down the pipes sometime next year...
