The only reason to update now is to get UMTS, or 3G (3:d Generation). It provides faster data transfer rate so you can surf faster and send/receive both pics and video and make video calls. If you don't need this, it's no use to update. A 2G phone is then enough. The coverage area have nothing to do with this, it's the same since you use the same masts and antennas.
