I don't quite agree.
The only reason to update now is to get UMTS, or 3G (3:d Generation).
It provides faster data transfer rate so you can surf faster and send/receive
both pics and video and make video calls.
If you don't need this, it's no use to update. A 2G phone is then enough.
The coverage area have nothing to do with this, it's the same since you use
the same masts and antennas.

The UMTS (3G) are bigger then 2G. They are "flip up:s" so a screen can be
used.
