Aren't you ignoring the fact that hardware is cheaper than ever?  You had to 
re-finance the home in order to buy a PC when they first came out and that was 
expensive in the dollars of the time.   My XT cost 10X more that what is on my 
desktop now... My 286 Cost  5x more... my 486 cost 3x more.
