I've heard of that being done but the opportunity to buy one or
the other is not universal across the USA.

I know of many who feel much the same way and refuse to have
cable at their homes. With the popularity of 'reality' shows I
feel that cable TV has sunk even lower and that disturbs me. 

I encourage my children who do have cable to not allow their
children to watch unattended if at all possible. I am
uncomfortable with the effect TV programming is having on my
children and grandchildren. 

I see that Ross has jumped in on this thread and while I don't
agree with the _tone_ of his rebuttal I have to admit that the
internet can be many times worse than cable TV with the same
inherent need to monitor children's access. Unfortunately some
adults can't cope with the internet as per Ross references to
the cyber stalking of young children by adults. 

I would prefer that adults would step in and manage the
'information' in a more responsible way even if that means some
restrictions and the loss of a certain 'freedom' that may be
too tempting for too many people (both young and old).
